Active Member Eligibility
Physicians elected to Active membership after December 31, 2988 must:
- be three-year, ACGME FM residency trained; or
- have completed either an AOA-approved one-year rotating general or FM internship plus two years of an AOA-approved general or FM residency, or an AOA-approved three-year general or FM residency; or
- have completed a FM residency program approved by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and who were subsequently board certified by the CFPC and practice exclusively within the U.S.; or
- have held Active membership prior to or as of December 31, 1988.
Additionally, applicants must be duly licensed in Massachusetts, meet CME requirements for entry into the Active category (see below), and one of the following criteria:
- Physicians engaged in the practice of family medicine.
- Physicians applying after December 31, 1988 who are engaged in the practice of emergency medicine.
- Physicians engaged in full-time teaching of family medicine or full-time medical administration.

Former Active Members Re-applying for Active Status
Former Active members must furnish evidence of having completed 150 credits of continuing education acceptable to the Board of Directors, with the 150 credits accumulated during the three years immediately precedeing application.

Active Membership
- If the applicant is applying within the first year after residency completion, CME credits are not required for acceptance to Active status.
- If the applicant is applying more than one but less than three years after residency completion, the applicant must provide evidence of 100 approved CME credits completed during the two years immediately preceding application.
- If the applicant is applying more than three years after residency completion, the applicant must provide evidence of 150 approved CME credits completed during the three years immediately preceding application.
